Nigerian Star Boy Rema explains why he started smoking.
Popular Nigerian artiste Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, has spoken out about his father’s death and how it affected him growing up.
The ‘Calm Down’ singer claimed that after his father died, he was “forced to sell” his youth in order to provide for his family.
In an honest interview with GRM, Rema, 24, expressed a desire to “feel young again.”
He stated that he recently began smoking cigarettes to feel “free and break some rules again.”
Rema remarked that despite being an adult before electing to smoke, people continue to criticize his decision since he’s a star.
He said;
“I wanted to feel like a child again.” I feel like I grew up too quickly. When my father and brother died, my life changed dramatically. The weight was only on my shoulders, and I was forced to sell my youth to support my family.
“God willing, everything went smoothly, and quickly. And with fast fame comes quick maturity. It’s like an unending degree of seriousness. So many adults. So many meetings. I didn’t even roll with my age group.
“So with this endeavor [‘HeIs’], I just want to be a youngster. And it’s coming out. I’m not forcing it to come out. It simply fired my spirit. I just want to feel younger again. I just want to be a rebel. Kids make errors, and that’s okay. But if you’re a teenager and make the same mistake your peers would make, everyone will come after you just because you’re in the spotlight.
“I know folks who had a cigarette when they were 13, and now I’m 24 and smoking a cigarette because I want to feel free and break some norms. My entire life has felt quite planned and arranged. “I just got tired.”
