A young Nigerian who impersonated Flavour has been omprisoned for two years for a $53,000 scam
A federal high court in Lagos recently convicted Courage Ipaka, a Benin City resident who impersonated popular artist Flavour, to 24 months in prison for scamming a woman in the United States out of $53,000.
He was found guilty of defrauding US citizen Yvelte M. Thompson by impersonating Ada and accepting money via Bitcoin wallets while promising to arrange performances in the United States.
The inquiry against Ipaka’s actions was led by Azibagiri Dan Ekpar, an EFCC investigator. Ekpar said that the scam was discovered following a petition filed by Eyitayo Tolulope Abiodun and others on Thompson’s behalf.
He said:
“After receiving the petition, we invited Flavour, who was discovered to be innocent of the claims.
“Our investigation found that Ipaka impersonated Flavour and obtained $53,000 from Thompson in 2021.
He moved the monies to Bitcoin wallets and then changed them to Nigerian Naira, which he put into his Access Bank account.”
The EFCC successfully recovered N7.9 million from Ipaka, which was tracked back to Zenith and Access Bank manager’s checks.
