Paris2024 Olympics: Fake ticket sales network operated from Cameroon has been dismantled.
Cameroon did not shine in terms of sporting excellence during its participation in the Paris2024 Olympics; after a week of competition, six of its athletes had already been eliminated. Away from the sports, the country is garnering news in another arena.
According to French authorities, 85 fraudulent tickets were found among the ten million tickets sold. The overall damage exceeds 15,000 euros, and those pulling the strings are thought to be based in Cameroon.
In response to this circumstance, a special task team has been established inside the judicial police. Investigators swiftly discovered the scammers’ methods: “The victims of these ticket purchases to attend events were hooked through a Facebook loop,” says Magali Caillat, deputy director of the fight against financial crime. “They were offered pretty competitive tickets, but the equestrian ticket still cost 150 euros.
The investigators discovered the perpetrators of this swindle. Four people, aged 19 to 24, who live in the Paris region, have been arrested and put into custody. They are suspected of working as intermediaries to launder the proceeds of this fraud. The real masterminds of this operation are thought to be situated in Cameroon.
The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office has demanded that they appear in the criminal court on December 17, when they will be tried. This story emphasizes the importance of being vigilant against internet scams, particularly during large international events such as the Olympics.
